Pandacake plays tourist.

When i was growing up, i always dreamed of having a tree house. There were plenty of trees around but none of them had a house in them, nor did i have any tools in which to build one with. Living at one address for a maximum of two years didnt help things much either. The closest thing i had was a sheet tied to three chairs and my cardboard box... until i left a light on too close to the sheet, causing it to catch fire. Hmmm... maybe we can build some like this for Poppy one day.

What a complete and utter shock! We have been overwhelmed by everyone's support for our Pecanpals. In less than one day (23 hours and 45 minutes to be exact), all our Pecanpals found homes. Incredible.
We were so nervous leading up to the release date. We hardly slept a wink, and that had nothing to do with our newborn Poppy because she is sleeping very well now and is a very well behaved 8 week older. We thought that perhaps 10 sets would sell, and we tried our best not to get our hopes up.
Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts. We are deeply touched by your generous support.

It has been a long and extremely challenging journey getting these wooden figures out into the world. Sometimes we wish that a big production company was handling these for us, instead of us having to do everything ourselves, but then we wouldnt have learned what we know now and, as people say, life is full of experiences, and this is one of our defining ones. Haha. I guess what we mean is that this took a lot of work and now we have something to show for it. And all of you who have supported us... THANK YOU!!!! Sorry if this makes no sense.

We were going through some old photos of ourselves. Funny how you forget about things you used to wear. Gosh, there are some hairstyles we would definately rather forget about.

My brief stint as Andy Warhol's lighting engineer.

Many people dont know that i am associate professor at Cambridge.

Right about when the only pop worth talking about was soda pop.

NASA wouldnt hire me, so i started my own rocket company.
It didnt go so well. Just a bunch of fireworks.

I owned a rollerskating rink down by the Interstate.
Lots of hoola-girls and hoola-hoops.

This is just me angry.

Did you know i was in a 90's boy-band?

This was why it didnt go so well.

I ate a heap of cheeseburgers. A heap!

Noferin Progress: Paper Pushers & new member

These are some progress shots for the Paper Pushers show at Gallery 1988 San Francisco opening next Friday. I really enjoyed working with ink because i can concentrate a lot more on the form of the plants. It will be a great show! We will post the final pieces later.

And my tummy is growing bigger and bigger each day. I am in my 30th week now. Poppy is kicking a lot these days especially at night. She gets very excited after hearing stories. (yes, Nicho reads us stories every night before sleep) Sometimes she kicks so much that i can't go back to sleep. The doctor thought that i might have drunk too much coffee (thus making Poppy so hypo-active) but i don't drink coffee because it is bitter. hehe

I had to post these, otherwise you would get the story about the dead mouse that has been in the freezer for a month now. It was for a scientific study and i have been meaning to get rid of it, but i keep forgetting. Oh, i guess i need to clarify. It was purchased dead. We dont have a pest issue at our house, and i didnt kill it. That's just eeww!

It's cold. When is Spring coming?

The mountains are shrouded in mist all day long. It is very moody, but very cold. Brrr. Moments after taking this shot, the Kookaburra flew off and caught itself a tasty lizard! We planted a lot of bulbs a while back and patiently await their arrival. The Hyacinths are nudging the surface of the soil and the daffodils are also peeking their heads up, so it wont be long. We planted them a little late this year. They would already be up if they were planted on time. Oh well.

In other news, our Weeping Snowflake Cherry is bursting with buds. As is the huge pink blossom tree in the front and our Crab Apple trees. The Lilacs and the Wisteria should put on a good show soon and all the Grevilleas, Callistemons and other natives we have should be bursting with colour. We have a beautiful Lace Lady Robinia among other deciduous trees that we cant wait to see all green and leafy again. Hopefully we will get a good result this year. Last year they hardly flowered at all because of the drought we have been and are still having. We've given them more attention and we've had some rain this year, so fingers are crossed!

Soon we can re-pot our Water Lilies and put them in their new home. It is a HUGE, nicely deep glazed pot that is about 4 feet in diameter. That will means many, many blooms this year. Yah!

This isnt going to be a review, but we just got back from watching The Dark Knight and want to share how amazing it is! Heath Ledger is hauntingly brilliant. His performance is nothing short of genius. There is so much we want to talk about, but if we do we might sound a little geeky, so we just want to leave you with.... GO SEE IT. You will NOT be disappointed!!!!!

You may or may not know that I (Nicho) am studying Environmental Science. As such, there is much in the world (and at a local level) that causes great pain. The world is in a very sad state and... dont worry, i wont get started. Instead, i want to share something that is important, both on an environmental and artistic scale.

Sayama Forest, on the outskirts of Tokyo, Japan is where the master of animation, Hayao Miyazaki was inspired to create Tonari no Totoro. The forest is now under threat from urban development and needs our help!

A major art exhibition and auction is being held at the PIXAR studios, with all proceeds being donated to the fund. Leading artists from the fields of animation, comics, fine art and illustration are donating artwork for this spectacular show to be held in September.
Help spread the word. Totoro needs us!

We dont usually get excited about toy releases and in fact most of the designer toys we have purchased now lie sleeping in an old suitcase. There still are a few notable ones that we leave on display such as Yoshitomo Nara's Little Wanderer, Pete Fowler's Giant Snorse, Nathan J's Tree Dweller, Gary Baseman's Copy Cat and various Friends With You figures, mainly plush. But, being released this August is the next level of greatness by Bubi Au Yeung and Crazy Label.

These houses are the work of Vetsch Architektur from Germany. We really like their soft organic forms and intergration with nature. We dont think we could have one to actually live in, but to have one as a studio, with grass and bulbs growing on top would be wonderful! It reminds us of the incredible work of Hundterwasser.

Whilst we were in LA, we were lucky enough to spend the day with toy photographer extraordinaire, Brian McCarty. We have long been admirers of his work, and to tell you the truth, we were very nervous to meet him. A celebrity of sorts. We saw this in the local newspaper and it cracked us up immediately. In theory it is quite a good idea. It saves space as well as recycling the water used to wash your hands (it goes into the cistern and is used to flush the toilet). But it just looks so stupid. I dont want to wash my hands over the hole where i just did my number ones or twos. And once you have washed your hands, you would end up dripping water all over the toilet seat - and that could be awkward to explain to the next user. ^___^ It wasnt me, i swear!!

It's not a conclusion. That's quite a confusion.

Noferin show ENDS.

This show has finally come to an end. It has been a great journey for us and the pecanpals. We had such a great time. Our solo exhibition "The Start; or where we begin" at CoproNason Gallery is closing this weekend. If you haven't seen the show yet, you should head down to the gallery and have a final look at our works. We won't be back until September 2009. ;)

The gallery is also releasing 2 wooden Noferin prints in the next few weeks. Their prints are absolute quality. We are so excited!

What is happening in the schools?

We were watching Raggs this morning. As far as children's shows (where people dress up in costumes) go, it is quite good. The show promotes exercise, learning through problem solving and group activities, acceptance and tolerance with lots of fun scenes and engaging songs (our favourite songs are Paws Up!! and Wag and Wiggle Time). There is one annoying aspect however. The 5 characters are dogs, hence the name Raggs. That isnt the annoying part. The problem is with the costumes, which are very well made, but they are all technicolour. A bright orange dog? Magenta? A bright, glowing green squirrel looking dog with rainbow dread-locks?

Anyway, the real reason why we like the show is there are two segments where a cat interviews children, ala "Kids say the darnedest things" style.

Today's offering was about animals.

Cat: "What does a lion look like?"
Boy: "Ummm.....like... an elephant."

On another episode, which was about dinosaurs, an Indian boy started lecturing the cat about our prehistoric ancestors and the demise of dinosaurs. He then went on to explain the theory of evolution and its scientific applications (giving many examples). He was no more than 5 years old!

We have so little time left before we pack up our bags and fly fly fly! We are a mix of emotions. We are excited and anxious and nervous and a little apprehensive. Mostly we are excited though! Update on the sculpture

Took some quick progress shots of one of the sculptures for our upcoming Copro Nason show.
There is still a fair bit to do on Pecan, but he is definately getting there.

They are entirely hand crafted from pine wood and Pecan sits approximately 12 inches / 31cms in height.

It is the first time Nicho has ever tried to sculpt wood before. The only other thing he has sculpted is by using blue-tak. He used to make really detailed faces (quite small too) and freeze them.

We have to say it three times, because we have three water lilies in the garden. Well, they are actually in pots. Three big water pots! They arent all in bloom yet. There is a lovely yellow one as well.

Noferin: Solo Show Progress II

The studio is rapidly filling up with paintings, which reminds us, we need to buy more bubble wrap! We are starting to get a bit emotional as the body of work grows larger and we picture it hanging on the gallery walls. It is sad to see them go but we feel even happier knowing that they will be in loving homes and perhaps bringing a smile or two. It's better to share!!

Noferin: Back from framers

We had our first batch of paintings come back from the framers and we are so happy with how they look. We were originally going to go for a more decorative frame with this size, but after heaps of swapping and changing we eventually settled on these ones. They have a beautiful warming tone that comes through the frame. They work so well with all the pieces. Only this size painting will have this type of frame. The other sizes will have different ones. :) More coming soon... but dont expect to see them all!! You will have to attend the opening for that! haha

We have some BIG surprises for April at CoproNason!!!

Beach day!

We have had many days worthy of being a beach day but this is the first one we have actually had. We decided we needed to recharge our batteries! It was so beautiful. The water was so clear and warm. We saw little fishies swimming and there were these funny jellyfish that looked like a sausage. They didnt sting so we threw them at each other!

This was the first time we have ever seen a seagull actually eat natural food. Usually they are just begging for chips. They waited for the tide to go down and then they beat their feet together really fast and churned up some little sand worms. Was really interesting.

We received something so amazingly spectacular last night that the postman even came at 8.30pm to give it to us. (he knew that we just HAD to receive this package!!!) We cant express how excited and happy we are! It is the most sensational box of goodies. These are certainly going to be new additions to our family that we will love and cherish for ever and ever.

Thank you so very much Maz. You are the plush master!! Not only are they adorably cute and bring smiles to your face every time you look at them, but the quality of them is outstanding. We have our names inscribed in the tree - how cool is that!!?? The most touching part though is the Pecan and Cream Chilly's. That is just amazing!!!! Maz even got his ears right.

We have a little shed out the back that is a store-come-work-room. Nicho is currently having fun sculpting some wooden pieces. It is full of saw-dust!! This is what he sees from outside his door. Sunflowers are lovely but they are so very thirsty!! Candy planted these all by herself!!

Argghh, how are you supposed to decide between them all? This little baby face was smiling at us as soon as we saw her. Fingers and toes are crossed that we can adopt her.

Bored Inc, (headed by the amazingly talented superstar, Courtney) makes the most gorgeously cute (and sometimes naughty) stuff. They have belts and bags and jewelry and stickers and almost everything you could ever need. Plus, the quality is beautiful! Here is a little taste. And remember, we dont normally advertise other people's stuff, so you know this has to be good!

We arent into comics at all and comic movies usually bitterly disappoint us, BUT, Batman Begins transformed us. It was brilliant! Well, we are so excited about The Dark Knight next year. The new Noferin piece showing at CoproNason Gallery is finally complete! Oh, no, we still have to get it framed and photographed properly.

This has been the most challenging piece in the short history of Noferin so far. But, it has been enjoyable and rewarding working on a larger scale and is definately something we will be doing more of. It is the stuff twinkles in your eyes are made from. We are sad we have to send it away. Funny, we spend so long working on a piece and then the time we actually get to enjoy it is so small. Remember, you can roll down to see the entire progress!

Here is another Noferin progress post of the new piece going off to CoproNason Gallery in LA. The piece (sorry, we havent named it yet) is
18 x 24 inches (unframed), so it is much bigger than usual! Once it gets framed, it will be even bigger! On another note. It is boiling hot at the moment and although we had an air-con installed last week, the electrician hasn't connected the power yet. So it is just teasing us and we are sweating. Urrrgh!Hear it? We have purchased our second original piece of art. This amazing piece is by the super talented Jeremiah Ketner. We have admired his work for years now, but there is absolutely nothing that compares to the real thing. It has made us so happy. We never thought something could have such a profound effect. Grandma came and visited recently. We had a lovely time together. It was her second trip to Melbourne. We bought her a big box of mangoes for her to take back to all her swimming and dancing friends. She will be so popular now! Yummy mangoes. Ohhh, summer is in the air!
We have been having lots of fresh fruit juice and for breakfast, we have so much fruit that there is hardly any room for cereal! Problem solved: Get a larger bowl.

Oh, aren't we full of surprises today! Here are two Noferin pieces in early stages of not-so-completeness that are part of the WindUp Gallery Halloween show in Phoenix, Arizona. Seen the bats? Dont worry, they aren't nasty bats. These are Fruit-Bats, or Flying Foxes. They are lovely and they fly around the Sydney Harbour Bridge at night time. You may be wondering why our photographs are so good looking all of a sudden. Well, we recently bought a super duper amazing digital SLR. It is brilliant. These are only low-res, but they already look WOW.... heehehehehehe, we love it. Anyway, back to the informing: We also went to Danish Weekend at a Tulip Farm. It was very busy. We ate Profitjes (mini pancake things with sugar and maple syrup) and watched some Danish dancing. They were wearing massive wooden clogs. We dont know how they walked in them, let along dance! We were upset because we missed out on the egg and spoon race. But we saw lots and lots and lots and lots of Tulips!!! Tulips everywhere!

These are for Donna. We came to our favourite garden in the Dandenong Ranges to see the gorgeous cherry blossoms. They are only 12 years old, but look how big they are already! There are lots and lots of blossom trees - they even have a cherry blossom lane where you can walk under the arching branches. But when we got there, the blossoms were only starting, so we have to come back. We forgot that it is colder in the mountains and the blossoms aren't fully awake yet! Lucky we bought a Yearly Pass! We can come whenever we want now. Yipeee.

Today was a glorious day - you can tell by the beautiful blue sky! These magnolias are so beautiful and they have the most amazing smell. See Nicho sniffing it? He is eating the smell, it is that good! These magnolias look like a big bunch of parrots sitting on the branches.
